LIONS RIDE FIVE-GOAL FOURTH QUARTER TO SHUTOUT WIN OVER MARTLETS

The York University Lions field hockey team hosted the McGill Martlets on Saturday at Alumni Field in the first of a two-game weekend set. The Lions looked to bounce back after losing their first game of the season to the Waterloo Warriors, while the Martlets were searching for their first win of the season.

Keira Ho opened the scoring in the 12th minute to give York the lead late in the first quarter. Ho would double her tally in the 22nd minute, putting the Lions up ahead 2-0 at halftime. She then came close to scoring a third, but her shot went wide. Jewel Lew nearly extending York's lead, but McGill goaltender Gabriella Fourkas would deny her with a strong save tio keep the Martlets alive

After a scoreless third frame, it would take York just 54 seconds expand the lead in the fouth quarter thanks to a goal by rookie Tessa Wang, before Katie Tye made it 4-0 shortly thereafter. She nearly had a second but would be denied by Fourkas. However, just six seconds later, Juliet Redelaar would make it 5-0, Gates McAlister added York's sixth with her fourth goal of the campaign, before Tye rounded out the scoring to conclude a dominant fourth quarter and a 7-0 win for the Lions.

LOOKING AHEAD

With the win the Lions improve to 3-1-1 and sit atop the OUA East. The Lions face the Martlets in the back half of this weekend doubleheader on Sunday morning at Alumni Field. Game time is 11:00 am; admission is free.
