LIONS CLINCH 18TH CONSECUTIVE DIVISION TITLE WITH CLEAN SHEET VICTORY OVER BADGERS

The York University Lions men's soccer team faced the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon in a rematch of two of the top teams in the OUA West.

After defeating the Badgers 3-0 on Friday, the Lions looked to clinch top spot in the OUA West with another victory in this one. York entered the match with a 7-1-2 record, sitting at the top of the division, while Brock trailed just behind at 5-1-3. The Lions looked to extend their winning streak to and maintain their dominance, while the Badgers aimed to prove that York could be challenged.

Sloppy early play by the Badgers led to several fouls being assessed against them, while York was handed only a couple. In the 23rd minute, Christian Zeppieri capitalized on an opportunity and scored the opening goal for the Lions, giving them a 1-0 lead. Brock's Luca Dansei attempted to equalize shortly after, but York goalkeeper Michael Williams made a key save to preserve the lead. York carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Brock pushed to tie things up, but was hampered by offside calls and additional fouls. York matched Brock's physical play and held firm defensively, though the Lions also picked up a few fouls of their own, including a yellow card to Yigal Bruk just beyond the hour mark.

In added time, Dansei fired another shot for the Badgers, but Williams once again came up with a crucial save, as the Lions held strong and closed out the match with a 1-0 win.

York has clinched top spot in the OUA West and a bye through the opening round of the postseason. They can clinch the top overall seed in the OUA with a win over Algoma and one non-win (loss or draw) by the Toronto Varsity Blues over their last two games, or a draw and a loss by the Blues in their final two games.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will conclude the regular season on Saturday against the Algoma Thunderbirds on senior day at York Lions Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15 pm.
