The York University Lions women's soccer team faced the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon in the second leg of their home-and-home series, following a 1-1 draw on Friday evening at York Lions Stadium.
As the season draws to a close, both teams share the goal of securing the final OUA West playoff spot. The Lions entered the game with a 3-4-3 record, while the Badgers held a 3-3-3 record, fueling the competitiveness between the two sides.
Both teams came out strong, with solid defensive play, but the Lions pressed harder on offence. Fouls were called frequently on both sides as each team fought for the opening goal. In the 19th minute, Brook-Lynn Mitchell found her opportunity and scored her first career OUA goal, at a crtitical time, to give York the lead. Despite some scoring chances, the Badgers were unable to equalize, and the Lions held a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, the Lions' defence proved crucial in protecting their lead. York kept firm control as Brock pushed forward, with multiple shot chances that Lions goalkeeper Rumaysa Khan made the stop on, and several others that were blocked. In the final minute, Brock's Cassie Battaglini fired a shot in a last attempt to tie the game, but Khan made the save. The Badgers' late push was not enough, as the Lions secured a 1-0 victory.
With the win, the Lions are now alone in sixth place in the OUA West, just two points back of McMaster for fifth.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will close out the regular season on Saturday on senior day against the Algoma Thunderbirds, where a win or a Badgers loss, or a draw and a Badgers tie or loss, in their next game will clinch a playoff spot for York. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
