The York University Lions women's hockey team faced the Queen's Gaels in an inter-division matchup on Friday night in Kingston. The Gaels entered the contest atop the OUA East standings, while the Lions remained strong contenders in the West.
York came into the game with a 5-4-1-0 record, and Queen's held an impressive 4-2-4-0 mark. This was the first meeting of the year between the two teams, after last season's meetings were split 1-1, setting the stage for another competitive showdown.
The opening period featured disciplined defensive play on both sides, resulting in a scoreless frame. The Gaels, however, held the edge in shots 14-5.
Queen's broke the deadlock in the second period when Rhae Thomas capitalized on an opportunity to give the Gaels a 1-0 advantage. They held onto that lead through 40 minutes
In the third, Queen's added to its lead as Jada Wood found space inside the post to make it 2-0 Gaels. Moments later, Mikayla Cranney slipped behind the Lions' defence and extended the gap to 3-0.
The Gaels' defence held firm for the remainder of the game, securing a 3-0 victory on the road.
LOOKING AHEAD
This game serves as York's lone game of the weekend. Their next action comes next Saturday, Nov. 22, when they battle the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm.
