The York University's men's hockey team broke a difficult streak against the Laurier Golden Hawks this evening, earning a dramatic shootout win after a back-and-forth contest. The Lions entered the matchup looking to reverse their fortunes after two straight losses to Laurier.
York came out firing. Just 48 seconds into the opening period, Olivier Lamothe put the Lions on the board, and moments later Harry Clark doubled the lead. Laurier pushed back with a goal, but Mason Svarich restored York's two-goal cushion to make it 3-1 after twenty minutes.
The second period shifted the momentum. Laurier cut the deficit early, and eventually tied the game after sustained pressure. York responded when Jag Phangura scored his first of the season to reclaim the lead, but the Golden Hawks struck late and beat the buzzer with 12 seconds left to send the teams into the third period tied 4-4. Laurier carried that energy forward scoring to put them ahead 5-4, only for Lion Ryder Ringor to answer with his own first of the season, making it 5-5.
The high scoring pace continued in the third. With Laurier restoring a lead, but York replied once again, this time through Ethan Strik, who knotted the game 6-6 and forced overtime.
In the extra frame, both teams battled hard but inevitably neither could break through and the game headed to a shootout. In the shootout, the Lions were able to secure a crucial and well-deserved win after a long night of great hockey.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions are set to take on the Brock Badgers at home, next Saturday evening, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Canlan Ice Sports arena.
