Saturday night featured the York University Lions men's basketball team pitted against the Laurentian Voyageurs, who were sitting at 5-4 on the season. The Lions looked to get off to a good start and pick up their first road win of the season.
Jerimiah Kwarteng scored the Lions first seven points of the game, which included a three-pointer, and play was relatively even. The Lions then grabbed their first lead of the game at 13-11 off a mid-range jumper from Jordan Nelson. They finished a strong quarter up 21-15, with six different players factoring in the scoring.
The Lions led by as many as nine in the second quarter, but the Voyageurs were able to storm back to reclaim a 32-31 lead thanks to a 12-2 run. Laurentian outscored the Lions 22-15 in the quarter, with Kevin Okeke, Nickele Harris and Remi Tissington combining for 12 of York's 15. The Lions ended the half only down a point, 37-36.
The Voyageurs started the third quarter on a 9-0 run, growing their lead to double digits. The Lions were able to cut into the deficit, mostly from the free throw line, but were still outscored 20-11 in the quarter. With the score 57-47 after three, York looked to mount a big push final frame.
Another early 7-0 run from the Voyageurs put them up 17, 64-47. York fought back with buckets from Kwarteng and Harris, who both finished in double-digit scoring, but it wasn't enough, as the Lions dropped this one 72-60.
