The York University Lions women's hockey team hosted the Carleton Ravens on Thursday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports in the inaugural Elimination of Violence Against Women's and Girls Awareness Game, an event spearheaded by Lions defender Abby Hicks. Representiatives from the North York Women's Shelter were on hand, and all money raised from the event would benefit the NYWS.
On the ice, the Lions came into this game looking to bounce back from a 6-1 loss to Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday and halt a mini two-game losing streak. They struck first with just over two minutes to go in the opening period, when Lexy Anonech scored her first goal of the season. The lone assist was provided by Natalie Mamone, as York took a 1-0 lead to the second.
At the 12:52 mark of the middle frame the Lions got the doubled their lead on a Mikayla Totten strike. Her second of the season made it 2-0, and with less than four minutes left on the clock, Totten scored her second of the game and third of the year to extend the Lions lead to 3-0 after 40.
In the final period, The Ravens cut the lead to two six minutes in courtesy of Victoria Kay. Then, just 11 seconds later, Carleton's Erica Buckley potted her fifth of the year to cut the Lions lead to one. The Ravens tied the game with six minutes on the clock, with Kennedy Vickers evening things up with 6:05 left, eventually sending the game to overtime.
The extra frame was goalless and the game had to be settled on a shootout, where the Hayden Serniuk scored on the Ravens second shot, meaning Ginger Fast needed to score to keep it going. However, Ella Grad, who came in in relief of Kaitlyn Langille made the stop, and the Ravens completed the comeback, winning by a score of 4-3 in a shootout.
