The York University women's volleyball team secured their first victory of the season in thrilling fashion, defeating local rivals the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 in their home opener at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The match began with the Lions looking sharp, driven to get their first win on the board. They immediately established a dominant 5-0 early lead in the opening set, fuelled by an ace from Yulia Glazko and powerful hitting from Kianna Drewniak and Quincy Johnson. However, the Varsity Blues were able to push back late, successfully seizing the momentum to take the set, 25-21.Â
Undeterred, the Lions capitalized on the energy of the home crowd in the second set. Their continuous pressure forced several critical errors from the Varsity Blues, allowing the Lions to control the pace and even the score with a hard-fought 25-21 set win.
York carried that momentum into the third. Consistent team play and locked-in offensive pressure, with every player logging crucial touches, helped them maintain the edge. The Lions secured their second consecutive set victory, winning 25-21, and taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lions closed the door decisively in the fourth. With Victoria Herrington absolutely crushing the ball the Varsity Blues could not stop the Lions attack. York ran away to a 25-19 win in the set, solidifying a well-deserved 3-1 match victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Up next, the Lions will look to use their momentum as they take on the Varsity Blues again tomorrow evening. Game two of the weekend series is set for 6:00 pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre.Â
