It was a cloudy Friday night in London as the York University Lions women's soccer team visited the Western Mustangs, renewing a rivalry that produced one of last year's most memorable moments. Eleven months ago, Sabrina Fabiano's 100th-minute winner sent York past Western in the OUA quarter-final. This time, with the Mustangs leading the OUA West at 5-0-1 and York sitting fifth at 3-2-2, both sides entered with plenty to play for.
The first half was evenly matched, with both teams trading chances but neither ableto break through. Fabiano and Giuliana Paolella both tested Western keeper Samantha St. Croix, while on the other end, Rumaysa Khan made a couple key saves on Gabby Kohut and Reese Fowler. The teams went into halftime in a scoreless deadlock.
Western opened the scoring in the second half, finally solving York's back line in the 71st minute when Sophia Saville netted her second of the season off a feed from Mara Sanauceanu. Just four minutes later, Saville struck again, doubling the lead for the Mustangs, making it 2-0. Then, Fowler added her fifth of the campaign in the 81st minute to seal it, as Western pulled away late to secure a 3-0 win.
LOOKING AHEAD:
