LIONS RIDE DOMINANT FIRST HALF TO CONVINCING VICTORY OVER MARAUDERS

The York University men's soccer team travelled to Hamilton to face the McMaster Marauders on Friday evening in the first game of a home-and-home series, looking to bounce back after dropping three points to the Laurier Golden Hawks. The major talking point heading into this game was how the Lions would cope without their star goalkeeper, Alessio Carbone, who is currently facing a two-game suspension following a straight red card against Laurier. Michael Williams was called up to the starting eleven to replace Carbone.

The game started evenly, with both goalkeepers registering saves in the first 10 minutes. McMaster played a possession-based game, with Mcmaster's keeper Ethan Cagalj frequently stepping out of his box to play from the back. The Lions made an adjustment this and switched tactics to a high press, which forced several errors in McMaster's midfield and led to scoring opportunities for York. The Marauders' defence struggled under pressure as Cagalj was forced to make two key saves in the 17th and 22nd minutes from shots by Anthony Morano and Christian Zeppieri.

The Lions' press paid off in the 29th minute, as reigning OUA West MVP and U SPORTS Player of the Year Zeppieri opened the scoring after a beautiful link-up play with Anthony Aromatario. Just minutes later, Zeppieri scored again, capitalizing on an error from Cagalj, who mistimed his run off the line, leaving the goal exposed. Zeppieri has now registered 3 goals in 3 games on the campaign.

McMaster had no answer to York's offensive display; the majority of the first half was played in the Marauders half. York capped off their dominant half with a goal in the 38th minute, as a Zeppieri free kick found Matthew Medeiros' head, which forced a save from Cagalj, but Morano was there to convert the rebound to make it 3-0.

Michael Williams registered two saves as York's defence limited McMaster's chances. There were no goals in the second half, as York comfortably saw out the match to earn a 3-0 win and three points.
