The York University Lions women's hockey team went head-to-head with the Guelph Gryphons at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday evening. The Lions entered the matchup with a 5-8-1-2 record, while the Gryphons came in strong at 12-5-2-4, riding a two-game winning streak. A win would have been their first of 2026, and been an important step for the Lions as they look to make a run toward the postseason.
The opening period showcased strong competition, with both teams trading chances. Near the midway mark of the period, Guelph's Jayden Calder was able to find the back of the net, giving the Gryphons the lead. Despite continued pressure from the Lions, Guelph held on to their advantage heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, Alexie Oliver doubled the lead for the Gryphons with her third of the year. The visitors continued to control of the pace of play, and added a third with 4:02 to play in the middle frame courtesy of Maddie Min. Guelph led 3-0 after 40 while outshooting the Lions 30-16.
In the final period, the Gryphons remained defensively solid and protected their advantage. York worked hard to generate offense, but it was not enough, as the Gryphons secured a 3–0 victory over the Lions.
