LIONS TURN TABLES ON THUNDERWOLVES, WIN IN FOUR SETS ON SENIOR DAY

The York University Lions women's volleyball team hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves on senior day at Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday. The Lions lone senior Quincy Johnson, was honoured pre-game for her four seasons as a Lion. York came into this game looking to split the weekend series with the Thunderwolves after losing the first match in four sets on Friday night.

The Thunderwolves started the game by going on an early 7-2 run. Victoria Herrington's offensive displays helped rally the Lions, who went on a 13-5 run. They took their first lead at 12-11 and never trailed again in the set. A Herrington kill capped off the opening frame, a 25-23 Lions win.

The home side built off that first set win, dominating the second from start to finish clinching set it on a pair of Lakehead errors with Herrington on the service line. York took the second 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lions led for majority of the third set – by as many as six – but just as it looked like were going to run away with it and earn the sweep the Thunderwolves went on a late 6-0 run to take a 21-19 lead and force a Lions timeout. York then scored five of the next six tout of the timeout o go up 24-22, but the visitors stormed back with the next four points, as they stole the third, 26-24, to cut the Lion lead in half.

The Lions bounced back, and led throughout the fourth and set. Though Lakehead, who trailed by as many as four in the set, clawed back to within one, they never got any closer as the Lions eventually closed it out, 25-21, on a Herrington kill. Julia Typa led the team with kills with 19 and Herrington followed suit with 17. Johnson, meanwhile, had six kills, while amassing 14 digs and four blocks on the defensive side of the ball.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions travel to London next week to face the Western Mustangs for a pair of matches to close out the 2025-26 season. The first match goes Friday at 1:00 pm, live on OUA TV.
