FIRST-HALF FLURRY FINISHES OFF LIONS 20TH STRAIGHT DIVISION TITLE

An impressive four-goal performance in the opening half elevated the York University Lions men's soccer team to a decisive 4–1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at York Lions Stadium on Friday night, moving their record to a perfect 9-0 on the season and clinch York's 20th straight division title.

York wasted no time making their presence felt, testing Guelph goalkeeper Liam Glas in the third minute with a shot by Marco Sciortino which led to a Ryan Robinson corner kick. The Lions struck first in the ninth minute when a brilliant finish from the right side by Matthew Fischer gave York a 1-0 advantage. Guelph responded with a push of their own, testing York keeper Micheal Williams in the 11th minute and hitting the crossbar on an Ethan Fraser header in the 19th minute, before Ambrose Tinmouth equalized for the Gryphons in the 23rd.

However, the Lions regained total control in the final 20 minutes of the half. First, Anthony Morano finished off an assist from Fischer in the 29th minute to restore York's lead at 2-1. After Williams and defender James Fidalgo turned aside a couple of dangerous Gryphon opportunities, York unleashed their offence with back-to-back goals before the breakt. Zeppieri extended his scoring streak to three with his tenth of the year in the 45th minute, before Morano scored his second goal of the match just seconds later, into first-half stoppage time, to send the Lions into halftime holding a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Lions effectively neutralized the Gryphons in the second half, relying on defensive structure and key roster rotations. York introduced fresh legs through a wave of substitutions, bringing on Justin Cicchillo, Aki Zagar, Jaxon Grey, Maverick Wright, and Alessandro Troisi. Additionally, former Gryphon keeper Nicholas Potalivo entered the match in the 81st minute to replace starting keeper Michael Williams and close out the victory against his old team. York continued to press in the final minutes, with rookie Nakye Greenidge-Duncan forcing a late save from Glas in the 87th, as the Lions comfortably locked down the 4–1 home win and clinched another OUA West title.

LOOKING AHEAD:

York will look to extend their win streak to 10 when they travel to Hamilton on Sunday evening for their second and final meeting of the year with the McMaster Maruaders. The Lions earned a convincing 4-0 win over the maroon and white in their Orientation Game on Sept. 3. Sunday's rematch gets underway at 6:15 p.m., and you can watch it live, free of charge on OUA TV.
