The York Lions Women's Hockey Team will be looking to secure their first win of the season this weekend when they head down to Waterloo for a double-header against both Waterloo schools. Â
York comes off their opening weekend in which they played in back-to-back close contests. The Lions first played the Western Mustangs in their home opener on Friday, unfortunately coming up short in that game 3-2. On Saturday, they went on to face the Windsor Lancers in another hard-fought contest. The Lions unfortunately came up short again this time by a score of 4-2.Â
York will first face-off against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night. Waterloo is also searching for their first win of the season as they lost to Toronto last weekend. The game against York will be the Warriors home opener for the 2026-27 season.Â
Last year's meetings between these two teams came with a split of victories. York won the first match between the two sides with Waterloo winning the second match. The home team won both games between these two teams last year, but every year is a new one, and nothing is guaranteed.Â
On Saturday, York is scheduled to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Laurier enters the weekend at 1-1, with a loss to Toronto and a win against TMU in the Golden Hawks home opener. Laurier will also be coming into the game against York following a matchup against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks the night before, making it the second night of a back-to-back for them as well.Â
Last year's meetings between York and Laurier did not fare well for the Lions, as the Golden Hawks took both meetings against the Lions. However, the 2026-27 season is a new season, and both teams have started fresh from their years past. York will be looking to do something on Saturday that they couldn't last year, beat the Golden Hawks.Â
All three teams are still looking for their first power play goals of the season, going a combined 0 for 15, with 9 of those missed opportunities coming from Laurier. Waterloo also carries a perfect penalty kill going into the weekend, killing off all four opportunities. On the contrary, York has surrendered one power play goal in four penalty kills, while Laurier has surrendered two power play goals in 11 penalty kills.Â
Both games are scheduled to take place in Waterloo on Friday and Saturday and are set for a 7 PM EST puck drop. Both games will also be available to stream on oua.tv.Â
