LIONS FALL TO VARSITY BLUES IN HOME OPENER

The York University Lions men's basketball team played against the Toronto Varsity Blues on the court for their home opener at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The game started with a competitive first quarter as both teams looked to set the pace early. York got on the board early with solid inside execution, while Josiah McKnight attacked the glass to secure 4 early rebounds and convert 4-of-4 from the free-throw line on his way to 8 points in the frame. Daren Clarke caught fire from deep with a pair of triples, helping the Lions establish an early rhythm and take a narrow 22-21 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter stayed tightly contested as the Lions continued to execute brilliantly. Kevin Okeke provided an offensive spark by draining a clean three-pointer, while Zion Messam came up big on the defensive end with 2 crucial steals. LaDainian James also added a perimeter jumper, helping York cap off a brilliant first half and head into the locker room with a 39-34 lead.

Coming out of the break, the Lions looked to hold off a surging Toronto squad. Clarke continued his strong shooting night by knocking down 2 more shots from beyond the arc in the third quarter, adding 8 points in the period. Nickele Harris worked hard under the rim to pull down 4 important rebounds in the quarter, anchoring a strong defensive effort under the glass. Despite the grit and physical play from York, Toronto capitalized on momentum to take the lead heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw York rotate their bench to close out the contest. Messam sparked the offense with aggressive drives to the rim, banking field goals and sinking a clutch free throw. James kept the intensity high by fighting for loose balls and converting 2-of-2 free throws down the stretch. Daren Clarke and Nickele Harris also chipped in valuable perimeter shots late in the game, though Toronto ultimately pulled away to secure the victory.

Even though Toronto took control late, the Lions put together several fantastic individual performances that highlighted their grit and potential. Daren Clarke led all scorers for the Lions with 22 points, showcasing his range by sinking 4 triples. Nickele Harris anchored the racking up 11 points and pulling down 10 massive rebounds. McKnight also turned up all-around with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Lions fought hard, yet fell short and start the season 0-1. York will be back in action tomorrow when they host the Nipissing Lakers at the Tait McKenzie Centre for an 8 PM EST tip-off.
