SPECIAL TEAMS SINKS LIONS IN LOSS TO LAKERS

The York University Lions women's hockey team hit the road Tuesday night to face the Nipissing Lakers at the Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens in North Bay in a rescheduled rematch between the two sides, after inclement weather forced a postponement of the originally-scheduled game on Jan. 23, York entered the contest carrying confidence from a hard-fought 2-1 overtime win against the Lakers on Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports.

Nipissing wasted little time asserting control, opening the scoring just 42 seconds into the first period. While York answered back midway through the frame on Abbey McMillan's first of the year, the Lakers capitalized on three late-period power plays, including a full two-minute 5-on-3. Nipissing scored on all three player advantages, and netted a total of four goals in 1:19, exploding for six first-period goals to take a commanding lead into the intermission.

The Lions got one back late in the second period and were rewarded when rookie Aashna Johal scored her first OUA at 16:05, finishing a setup from Lexy Anonech. However, Nipissing added two more goals before the in a 20-second span shortly after the Johal marker, making it 8-2 after 40.

The Lakers added one more 4:59 into the third to cap off a strong offensive night. York generated chances throughout the contest, outshooting the Lakers 26-19, but was unable to break through against Nipissing goaltender Jordan Sladics, who stopped 24 of 26 shots to secure the win.

Special teams played a decisive role, as the Lakers went 3-for-5 on the power play, while York was held scoreless on five opportunities.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Following the loss, the Lions will look to regroup as they continue their season-ending road trip. York heads to Guelph to take on the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, February 6, 2026, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 pm. You can stream that one live on OUA TV.
