The York University Lions men's basketball team hosted the Western Mustangs for their annual Black History Month game on Friday night at Tait McKenzie Centre. The Mustangs presented a difficult challenge, sitting second in the OUA West but the Lions were looking to secure a win against Western, which would have been their first victory over the Mustangs since 2013.
Western opened the scoring with a jump shot by Matteo Zagar, but the Lions answered immediately with a jump shot from Remil Tissington. However, Western then went on a 9-2 run, punctuated by a steal by Zagar that led to a slam dunk by Joe Baggaley Lacrete, making the score 11-4 Mustangs. Although the Lions responded with a three pointer from Tissington, their only triple of the opening quarter, the Mustangs led 24-15 after one.
Western continued to build on the lead in the second, going on a 6-0 run to start the frame, pushing the advantage to 30-15. The Mustangs controlled the pace and extended their lead to as many as 16 in the quarter. York cut it to as close as ten, 38-28, but the half ended with a three pointer by Lucas Sheets, giving his team a 47-33 lead at the half.
The Mustangs continued to pour it on out of the break, leading by as many as 21 midway through the quarter. A late jump shot by Raequon Pryce extended Western's advantage to 74-51 through three.
The Lions played their best quarter of the night in the fourth, with the Mustangs outscoring them 21-17. Jeremiah Kwarteng. scored the final points for York with a jumper, but the visitors took this one 95-68.
