The York University Lions women's soccer team delivered an outstanding performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Algoma Thunderbirds 4-0 at Superior Heights CVS Turf Field in Sault Ste. Marie.
York established control early in the opening half, repeatedly pressuring Algoma's backline. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when midfielder Erica Di Matteo capitalized on an assist from Nia Fleming-Thompson to open the scoring with her first goal of the season, and her first in nearly three years, dating back to Oct. 13, 2023, vs. Guelph when she scored a pair.
Fleming-Thompson doubled the lead in the 39th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the year to make it 2-0. Just before halftime, forward Olivia Zeitler capitalized on an assist from Joanna Abdelmalak in the 45th minute, scoring her first career OUA goal and sending the Lions into halftime with a commanding 3-0 advantage.
The Lions maintained their strong defensive play throughout the second half. Algoma created its best opportunity to respond early in the half when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 54th minute. The try was taken by Berlyn Killoran, but York goalkeeper Charlotte Phillips made a crucial save to deny the attempt and preserve the clean sheet.
The Lions kept up their attack through the remainder of the half, generating four late corner kicks and forcing multiple stops from Algoma keeper Paisley Pennington. York put the final touches on the victory in the 89th minute when rookie substitute Leanna Massi scored her first OUA marker off an assist from Sienna Caeser to lock in the 4-0 final score.
Phillips secured the shutout with saves on two shots on target across 90 minutes. Pennington, meanwhile, recorded nine saves under heavy offensive pressure from York's attack, making nine saves on 13 York shots on goal.
York outshot Algoma 13-2 overall and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
