The York University Lions field hockey team took on the Guelph Gryphons for the second and final time this season on Thursday night in the Royal City. The Lions were looking to sweep the season series after beating the Gryphons 6-0 in their home opener on Sept. 13.
York started the game with a few opportunities off penalty corners but none were converted into goals. The shots favoured the Lions 3-0 in the opening half, and the game remained scoreless at the half. Within the first 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter, York got a few opportunities through penalty corners and shot attempts, After mustering just three shots in the first 30 minutes, the Lions fired four toward Gryphon keeper Samantha Wright in the third, but were unable to find the back of the net, keeping the game goalless through three.
However, less than two minutes into the fourth, York's Kathryn Carlow broke the stalemate with her league-leading fifth of the year, tying her for tops with Sophie Pomeroy of Guelph. Then, just four minutes after being substituted on in place of Juliet Redelaar, Keira Ho scored her first of the season and York's second goal of the night with just over six minutes to play.
The Gryphons remained without a shot on target in this one, as the Lions came away victorious by a score of 2-0, moving to 3-1-1 on the season.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will return home to battle the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday at Alumni Field. Centre pass is set for 11:00 a.m., as the Lions look to avenge their season-opening defeat at the hands of the Blues. Admission is free.
