The York University field hockey team came head-to-head with the Toronto Varsity Blues in a match Sunday at York's Alumni Field. York entered the game looking to build on its 2026 campaign, while Toronto came into the game unbeaten to start the regular season. 

In the first quarter, York came out aggressively, earning an early penalty corner around the fourth minute. Katie Tye tested the Toronto defense with a shot shortly after, while goalkeeper Mary Yang made an early save to keep the game scoreless. York continued to create chances before Mufarowashe Matambo scored around the 13th minute, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. 

The second quarter saw York build on its momentum. Toronto received a green card early in the quarter before York earned several penalty corners and created more scoring chances. Gates McAllister scored around the 19th minute to make it 2-0. York continued to press, and McAllister added another goal around the 26th minute, giving the Lions a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime. 

York continued to control the pace in the third quarter. Toronto generated opportunities of its own, but York's defense limited the Blues' chances. Yang made another save on a York attack around the 41st minute, while Toronto goalkeeper Ella Ciesielski also turned away several York shots. The score remained 3-0 heading into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, Toronto came out with pressure and earned three consecutive penalty corners early in the frame. Maggie Mullins and Alicia Lung both had shots saved by Ciesielski during the opening minutes. York then responded, earning a penalty corner around the 47th minute before Katie Tye scored at 47 minutes, assisted by Matambo, to extend the Lions' lead to 4-0. 

Toronto quickly answered. Maggie Mullins converted a penalty stroke around the 48th minute, cutting York's lead to 4-1. The Blues continued to push, earning another penalty corner and creating several late opportunities, but Yang made the necessary saves and York's defense held firm. 

York held on for the 4-1 victory, completing a strong home performance against its OUA rival. 

The win continued a recent rivalry between the two teams, with York having defeated Toronto in the 2025 OUA championship final. 

The Lions will look to continue their season when they host the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at Alumni Field.
