Intramural Basketball

Men's and Women's Rules

The rules of the current OBA and the York University Intramural Program will be enforced with the following modifications:

  • A team will default a scheduled match if they are not ready to play 10 minutes after the scheduled time. Two defaults will result in elimination from the league.
  • Each game will consist of 2, 20 minute halves, running time. The last five minutes of the second half will be stop time.
  • One 20 second time out, per team will be permitted in the second half only.
  • Overtime, in the playoffs only, will consist of five minutes, stop time. Consecutive overtime periods will be decreased at the referees discretion.
  • There will be a 5 minute break between halves, time permitting. If the game starts late, the break will be decreased at the referees disretion.
  • To be eligible to play in the playoffs, a player must have competed in at least 50% of the regular season games of that team.
  • All players must play in at least one preliminary game to eligable to participate in the playoffs.
  • A team will default if they do not have at least four players on the court.
  • Regular/unlimited substitutions are permitted.
  • There will be at least one re-alignment during the season so that teams will play in the appropriate tier.
  • Team are required to have matching jerseys, with numbers by the date specified by the convenor.

Fouls:

  • A player is ejected from the game after five personal fouls.
  • A player is ejected from the game after two technical fouls (to be reviewed by the Intramural Coordinatoor for further suspension).
  • A team is in the bonus in each half after the team's seventh team foul (one and one free throws).
  • A team is in the double bonus in each half after the team's tenth team foul automatically two free throws).
  • A technical foul is two shots and the ball.
  • Dunking the ball is prohibited in the Tait McKenzie Centre gymnasiums and will be treated as a technical foul.

Co-ed Rules

The rules of the current OBA and the York University Intramural Program are applied and modified as follows:

  • A team will default a scheduled match if they are not ready to play 10 minutes after the scheduled time. Two defaults will result in elimination from the tournament.
  • Each game will consist of 2, 20 minute halves, running time. The last five minutes of the second half will be stop time.
  • One 20 second time out, per team will be permitted in the second half only.
  • Overtime will consist of five minutes, stop time, in the playoffs only.
  • A team consists of five players on the floor. There must be at least two members from each gender at all times.
  • Male players are not allowed in the entire area of the free throw line with borders en route to the end line of the court (key area). This applies to all cases without exception. The violations of this rule will be treated as follows:

  • If there is an encroachment in the offensive end, possession will be given to the defensive team, out of bounds.
  • If there is an encroachment in the defensive end, 1 point will be awarded to the offense and they will take the ball out of bounds.

  • All players must play in at least 50% of games played to be eligible to participate in the playoffs.
  • A team will default if they do not have at least four players (must be two from each gender at all times)
  • Regular/unlimited substitutions are permitted.
