RULES AND REGULATIONS

Intramural Broomball

  • The game will consist of two, 20-minute halves, running time.
  • A team will default if they are not ready to play five minutes after the scheduled start time.
  • Players should wear rubber soled shoes. No spikes or rubber cleats are allowed. Broomball shoes are also not permitted.
  • Equipment:
    • Knee, elbow, shin pads and gloves are permitted and strongly recommended.
    • Goalie pads and long coats are not permitted.
    • CSA-approved helmets with chin straps are mandatory (face mask for goaltenders are strongly recommended.
    • Brooms and balls are available at the arena. All players must leave their YU-card to sign out a stick.
  • Lacrosse style face-offs will be in effect.
  • There will be no time-outs.
  • No line changes except when play is in motion, or a goal is scored, or in between periods.
  • All minor infractions will be three minutes running time:
    • Incidental contact.
    • Raising stick above the waist (on backswing or follow through).
    • Swiping at a ball in mid-air (baseball swing).
    • Slide tackles.
    • Kicking the ball to relieve pressure or delay the game.
    • Offensive crease infraction (Note: defensive crease infraction is also a penalty but IF the defensive player touches the ball in the crease, a penalty shot will result).

      NOTE: Any combination of three minor penalties will result in ejection from the game.

  • Off-sides: Any ball crossing two lines will be considered an offside and a face-off will occur at the point of origin. If the ball crosses the second line before the player, it is not offside.
  • Major infractions: Results in ejection from the game and another member of team must serve the seven minute penalty. All major penalties will be reviewed by the Intramural Programs Officer for further suspension, up to and including a one-year suspension form all intramural sports.

    NOTE: Any player that is ejected from the game must leave the building. Failure to do so will result in further suspension

    • Unsportsmanlike conduct.
    • Fighting.
    • Intent to Injure.
    • Verbal or physical abuse of official.
    • Travesty of game.
  • Dribbling, catching, cradling or grabbing the ball will result in possession being be given to the opposing team.
  • Rules for overtime: In the playoffs only, a 15-minute (running time) sudden death overtime will be played in the event of a tie at the end of regulation time
    • Both teams will begin with a goalie and five players (three of each gender).
    • At the twelve minute mark, play will be stopped and the goalies from each team will remove. Five players will remain on the ice (at least two of each gender). No players are permitted to enter the crease area. If a defensive team touches the ball in the crease, a goal will be awarded to the offensive team.
    • At the nine minute mark, another player will be removed from the ice. This player must be of the opposite gender to the goaltender, since rules dictate that there will always be two players of each gender on the ice.
    • At the six minute mark, another player (of opposite gender to the last player) will be removed from the ice.
    • At the three minute mark, another player will be removed from the ice. Must be of the opposite gender as the last player (there should be one male and one female on the ice at this time). Line changes may occur during overtime but only while play is in progress.
    • In the event that the game is still tied, a shoot-out will occur. Two male shooters and two female shooters will be selected from each team. The first team to shoot is decided by a coin toss. If a winner is not declared after the first round of shooters, a sudden death shootout will occur. Teams must keep the ratio of one male to one female shooter in sudden death. All male and female players must shoot once before another can shoot a second time.
  • All coincidental minor and major penalties shall be offsetting.
  • Players will receive an official notice of suspension from the Intramural Office. It is the team captain's duty to contact the Intramural Office to receive updates of suspension notices.
  • The following penalties may be in the form of a minor, double minor or major penalty: checking from behind; high sticking; slashing; body contact; and, roughing.
