Intramural Flag Football

Men and Women

The current CFL rules and York university Intramural Program rules shall apply with the following exceptions:

  • All flags, yardage sticks, belts and balls will be supplied by Recreation York.
  • No game shall be played over the allotted time limit. If the game begins late, the remaining time will be split into two equal halves.
  • A team will play with a maximum of eight players on the field and a minimum of six. Fewer than six on the field will result in a default and a score of 6-0.
  • One representative from each team will be required to do sticks. If the team does not have a player to fulfill this responsibility a default will be called.
  • One piece rubber cleats are permitted. Metal cleats and removable plastic cleats are not allowed.
  • The centre must snap the ball between his legs and the quarterback must be at least two yards back from the centre.
  • The lines official will count five steamboats out loud. The quarterback cannot cross the line of scrimmage before that time. No player from the defense may cross the line of scrimmage before the five steamboats have elapsed. Any hand-off will nullify the steamboats and the opposing team may rush across the line of scrimmage.
  • There are three downs to make thirty yards, which is measured by the official yardage markers (sticks).
  • Flags must be a different colour from jerseys.
  • Shirts must be tucked in so that the flags are fully visible. Flags must be worn on the outside of belts.
  • Kick-offs will be from the 45 yard line.
  • On the kickoff, four players must be on the line, ten yards from the kicker.
  • Onside kicks must travel at least ten yards before the kicking team may recover the ball.
  • Points:
    • One point = single, missed field goal or punt that is downed in the endzone
    • Two points = safety, ran or passed convert
    • Three points = field goal
    • Six points = touchdown
  • The ball is scrimmaged on the five yard line for converts.
  • If the ball is intercepted in the endzone, the intercepting team has the option of downing the ball or running it out. If the ball is downed, it comes out to the 20 yard line.
  • A missed field goal results in one point and the ball is placed on the 20 yard line. The receiving team has the option of running the ball out of the endzone and no points are awarded. A blocked field goal makes the ball dead.
  • If the field goal is made, the ball comes out to the 35 yard line.
  • Some common penalties are:
    • Delay of Game - Five yard penalty;
    • Illegal substitution - five yard penalty;
    • Offside - five yard penalty (offense may choose to keep the play or take the penalty);
    • Illegal procedure - five yard penalty;
    • Defensive pass interference - first down from spot of infraction;
    • Blocking - ten yards from point of infraction, loss of down;
    • Guarding the flag - five yards from point of infraction, loss of down.
  • A three minute warning will be issued by the official in the form of three sharp blows of a whistle. At least four plays must occur after this whistle.
  • There will be a coin toss to start the game. The winner of the toss has the choice to receive, kick or choose an end.
  • A player with no flags may catch the ball, recover a fumble but may not run with the ball. The play will be called dead.
  • Any player deliberately taking an opponent's flag off when they do not have the ball may be ejected from the game.
  • A fumble or missed pass in the backfield means that play is live and the defensive team may cross the line of scrimmage.
  • Players may not jump or dive to avoid being flagged. Spins will be permitted.

Co-ed

If a team has only three of one gender, they may still play with only four of the other gender. Fewer than three of each gender will result in a default score of 6-0.

  • A woman has to be directly involved in every fourth play. Directly involved means throwing the ball as quarterback, having a pass thrown to them or if the ball is handed off to a woman. A female quarterback who hands the ball off is not considered a female play.

Eligibility

To be eligible for playoffs, a player must have played in at least one regular season game. 

Scheduling

Men and Women

All games will be played between Monday to Thursday from 4 to 11pm. The tournament will run from September 21, 2009 to September 28, 2009. Games will consist of two twenty-minute halves. There will be a five-minute half time (if games are behind, the referee may eliminate the half time break). Teams may request certain days or times for games and the Intramural Office will attempt to grant requests. Teams are required to play each of their scheduled games.

Playoffs

The playoff schedule will be determined based on the number of entrants. A single elimination or double elimination tournament will be played.
