COX, VANCE NAMED YORK ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

York University Lions soccer players Michael Cox and Colm Vance were named York's co-male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 15.

Cox, a finance and business economics student from Calgary, was named the CIS championship MVP and the lone striker on the tournament all-star team after scoring four goals in three games, including two winners, to lead the Lions to their second straight national title.

The fourth-year striker opened the tournament with a bang, netting a hat trick in a 4-1 quarter-final win over Cape Breton with three goals in an 18-minute span in the second half, including the game winner in the 59th minute. In the championship final three days later, he scored a highlight-reel goal from an impossible angle to open the scoring in the 25th minute, a tally that stood as the winner in a 2-0 victory over UNB. He also scored in the third round of penalty kicks in the team's victory over UBC in the semifinals.

Cox finished as the tournament's leading scorer with four goals and also led all players with 11 shots on goal, and in six total playoff games he had eight goals, including the game winners in five of the Lions' six victories.

Vance, a kinesiology and health science student from Bradford, Ont., was named the goalkeeper on the CIS tournament all-star team after leading the Lions to back-to-back national championships this past weekend.

The fifth-year goalkeeper, who was also between the pipes for last year's title run, allowed only one goal in three games against the best teams in the country, including cleansheets in a semifinal win over UBC and the championship final against UNB. In the penalty-kicks victory over the Thunderbirds, Vance made a huge save on UBC's first shooter that stood as the difference as the Lions went on to win 5-4, and he was named player of the game for his efforts after also making six saves throughout the contest. One day later, he made two saves in a 2-0 triumph over the Varsity Reds to claim the banner.

York's athlete of the week awards are presented by York University Food Services, and all recipients will receive a $25 YU-card.
