York University Lions men's soccer player
Michael Cox was named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) male athlete of the week for the period ending Nov. 8.
Â
Cox, a finance and business economics student from Calgary, scored two clutch game-winning goals to lead the Lions to their third straight OUA banner this past weekend.
Â
The fourth-year striker, in his debut season with the program, scored the lone goal in the 111
th minute of Saturday's semifinal against the Toronto Varsity Blues to send the Lions to the OUA final on a beautiful curling strike that tucked into the net just inside the far post. One day later he was again the hero, heading a cross into the net in the 89
th minute to defeat rival McMaster 2-1 and claim the championship.
Â
Earlier in the week, Cox was named an OUA West first-team all-star after leading the conference in scoring with 16 goals in as many games.
Â
Cox is the seventh Lion to be recognized by the OUA this season. Teammate
Joey Cicchillo and volleyball player
Tyler Covach were previous recipients of the same award, while women's soccer players
Kiyani Johnson and
Nour Ghoneim, as well as field hockey player
Michelle Per, were named female athlete of the week. Rounding out the awards was football player
Jahmari Bennett, who was the special teams player of the week for the period ending Sept. 15.
Â
Cox and the rest of the men's soccer Lions have one more week in their season, and they will look to defend last year's national title on home turf when the CIS championships come to York Stadium beginning on Thursday, Nov. 12.
Â
McMaster Marauders women's rugby player Cindy Nelles earned the OUA's female athlete of the week award after earning CIS championship MVP honours while leading her team to their first national title. Â
