The York University Lions women's hockey team came up short on Friday night (Feb.12) losing 2-1 to the Western Mustangs in London, Ont.
The Mustangs surrendered 37 Lion shots on Friday night but the stellar goaltending from Western tender Kelly Campbell was the deciding factor in the win, as she turned aside 36 shots.
In the first period the Mustangs came out firing, and just over two minutes into the opening frame they managed to beat
Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) to give them the early advantage. The goal was scored unassisted by Katelyn Gosling.
As the Lions continued to fire from all angles they had no such luck beating Campbell, the offensive dominance by the Lions trickled into the second period and it wasn't until late that the Lions broke down the Mustang defence. On the power play
Chelsea Tucker (Alliston, Ont.) found defenseman
Kristen Barbara (Mount Hope, Ont.) for her second goal on the season to tie the game at two goals apiece. With 29 seconds remaining in the second period the Mustangs came galloping back, on a Lyndsay Kirkham feed to Kendra Broad, which was the eventual game winning goal.
After Friday's loss, the Lions fall to 4-4-10-3 and are near the bottom of the OUA standings. The Western Mustangs are in the hunt at 12-1-8-1 and are two points behind third place University of Toronto.
The Lions are back in action Sunday (Feb. 14) when they are home to take on the 7-2-11-1 Brock Badgers for a 2pm puck drop.
