York University Lions track and field athletes David McKay and Brittany Crew were named York's male and female athletes of the week respectively for the period ending Mar. 12.
 
McKay (Victoria) won his incredible fourth consecutive gold medal at the CIS Championships in the men's pole vault with a vault of 5.02m. The fifth-year senior ended his record-breaking career with the Lions with a seventh place finish and four gold medals in the CIS Championships in the pole vault, and five gold medals in the event at the OUA Championships.
 
He also set a personal best just two weeks ago at the 2016 OUA Championships, clearing the bar at 5.25m en route to the gold medal.
 
Crew (East York, Ont.) continued her spectacular season as she won two gold medals at the CIS Championships in the women's shot put (16.96m) and the weight throw (18.90). The shot put mark of 16.96m was a new CIS Championships record.
 
She remained undefeated on the season, and continued her record breaking year as she broke the OUA Championships records in both events just two weeks ago (17.49m – shot put, 18.75m – weight throw) and set personal bests in both events at the York Open in January, throwing for 17.78m in the shot put and 19.38m in the weight throw.  
 
The Lions indoor track and field season is now over as McKay and Crew will turn their attention to the outdoor season. McKay will head to a training camp in Italy once the winter semester is over, while Crew has an eye towards qualifying for the 2016 Olympics will be looking to meet the outdoor Olympic standard in the shot put to qualify for a spot on the team,
 
York's athlete of the week awards are presented by York University Food Services, and all recipients will receive a $25 YU-card.
