Box Score The York University women's hockey team scored two early goals to secure a 2-1 win against the Waterloo Warriors in their first game of the year on Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports.
Â
Just twelve seconds after the puck drop,
Kelsey McHolm scored her first of two goals assisted by
Courtney Gardiner and
Brooke Anderson. McHolm, a third-year veteran, led the team with seven goals and was third overall with ten points in the 2017-18 season.
Â
The Lions continued to dominate the first period and produced the most goal scoring attempts with a total of 17 shots.
Avery Reeves had an attempt at goal, followed by Anderson who shot a pass she received right across goal, however the Warriors goalie, Amanda Smith, saved both attempts. The score stayed at 1-0 for the Lions at the end of the first period.
Â
Yet again, McHolm was able to find the back of the net just twelve seconds into the second period to increase the Lions' lead to 2-0. A puck fell off the top of the Warriors' net and landed right on McHolm's stick who placed it perfectly in the bottom right corner. Cynthia Cavanagh created the first scoring chance for the Warriors when she received a centered pass from her teammate, but was ultimately unable to find the handle and the Lions led 2-0 at the end of the second period.
Â
The third period was increasingly more physical as the Lions fought hard to secure their lead and the Warriors looked to get a goal. The Warriors took 15 shots on the Lions' goalie,
Lauren Dubie who made it difficult for the Warriors to get a goal. At 12:54 there was a scramble in front of the Lions' net which led Jessie Fennell to assist her teammate Courtney Simpson to score a goal on Dubie whose vision was obscured by a number of players within the crease. With two minutes remaining, the Warrirors took a timeout and eventually pulled their goalie in hopes of tying the game, but Lions stayed strong defensively and won the game 2-1.
Â
The Lions are traveling to Kingston, Ont. on Friday, Oct. 26 where they will face the Queen's Gaels in their first away game of the season at 7:30pm.
