Home to the York University Lions field hockey and rugby programs, the Lions football practice facility and an array of York Athletics & Recreation campus and community rental clients, Alumni Field has received a major upgrade.

The existing turf, installed in 2013, has been removed and replaced with a new, FIFA quality-grade synthetic artificial surface, an investment that compliments the continued priority of revolutionizing and modernizing York's Athletics & Recreation facilities. The new surface will deliver enhanced shock absorption and improved athlete-safety through an upgraded base system increasing usability for venue stakeholders.   Designed to support day-to-day usage, meet major event hosting requirements and maximize annual utilization, the facility will provide a high-performance competition and training environment for a wide variety of sports.

In addition to an improved overall playing surface, the new install features permanent multi-sport lines for football, field hockey, rugby and soccer. This design allows greater accessibility for a variety of activities and will expand usage of the facility for varsity athletics, campus recreation, camp programs, community sport organizations and commercial rentals.

"The Alumni Field turf replacement was a key priority for Athletics & Recreation this year," said Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation Steven Chuang. "This investment in a state-of-the-art playing surface supports the department's ongoing commitment to enhanced programming and event hosting capacity, addresses the heightened demand for high-quality outdoor athletic spaces on campus and strengthens York's ability to host major local, provincial, national, and potentially international sporting events."

Furthermore, while York Lions Stadium remains York's premier FIFA-regulation soccer and football venue and major event facility, the revitalization of Alumni Stadium significantly strengthens Athletics & Recreation's overall outdoor sport infrastructure portfolio and creates greater flexibility for programming, varsity sport operations, and event hosting opportunities campus-wide.
