LIONS TENNIS TEAMS WIN BRONZE MEDALS AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The York Lions men's and women's tennis team brought home some hardware over the weekend as both teams claimed the bronze medal at the OUA championships.

The men's team defeated the McMaster Marauders 7-0 in the bronze medal match while the women's team also defeated the Marauders to claim a spot on the podium by a score of 6-1.

In the men's draw, York opened the tournament with an upset victory over the Waterloo Warriors in the quarterfinals on Friday. The Lions lost a match earlier in the season to the Warriors by a score of 5-2 and entered the tournament as the fifth seed. The Lions beat the fourth-ranked Warriors by a score of 6-1 to advance to the semifinals against the Western Mustangs. York was outmatched by the eventual gold medal-winning Mustangs on Saturday afternoon and dropped the match by a score of 6-1.

Despite the score line in the bronze medal match against the Marauders, the individual matches were extremely close with many of the matches going the distance. Three of the matches went the distance to three sets with York coming out on top in each match, while Tegbir Hara, Pierre Spencer and Sahil Sareen all won straight set singles matches respectively to close out the victory and win the third bronze medal in program history.

The women's team came into the tournament seeded second and had a bye into semi-finals. The Lions were upset 6-1 by the third-seeded Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday before rebounding in the bronze medal match on Sunday. They defeated McMaster by a score of 6-1 in yet another match that was closer than the final score line.

The doubles point came down to a tie-breaker and Heather Hills and Randa Hassan won a nail-biter 8-7 against McMaster's Adele Lee and Maya Emerson.

York went on to win at four singles matches to secure the victory. Adele Lee posted the sole point for McMaster with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Randa Hassan. In the number one spot there was some spectacular tennis as Sara Krupica held on to defeat Maya Emerson in two close tie-break sets, 7-6, 7-6. With the victory the Lions won their sixth consecutive medal at the OUA championships after winning a bronze medal in 2013, the gold medal in 2014 and three consecutive silver medals from 2015-17.
