LIONS HAVE MIXED RESULTS IN THREE MATCHUPS THIS WEEKEND

The York Lions tennis team had a busy weekend, playing games on three consecutive days starting with the Montreal Carabins on Friday, followed by the McMaster Marauders on Saturday and the McGill Redmen/Martlets on Sunday.
 
The Lions were in tough against the Carabins in the first match of the weekend, as the men's team were shutout 6-0 and the women's team were defeated 4-2. Picking up victories for the Lions were Heather Hills, who battled through an injury to win a close match 8-7, and Randa Hassan who won convincingly by a score of 8-2.
 
York bounced back on Saturday as both teams won by scores of 4-3 against the Marauders.
 
On the women's side, Hassan played with a lot of focus and intensity against her opponent and picked up her second victory of the weekend with a straight-sets win 6-2 and 6-2. Scoring other singles victories for the Lions were Dina Hassan, who won convincingly 6-0 and 6-0, Vanessa Ereqi who played a solid match winning 6-3 and 6-2 and Aryanne Hart-Dixon, who won a close match by scores of 6-4, 5-7 (10-7). Dina Hassan and Hart-Dixon also won their doubles match by a score of 8-4.
 
The Lions men's team went undefeated in doubles play against the Marauders winning all three of their matches. In singles action, George Zoidl had a strong day for the Lions winning his match 6-4 and 6-2 against the Marauders Freeman Paczkowski, who defeated him last year. Sahil Sareen also played his best match of the season winning 6-4 and 6-3, Teg Karan Brar won a tight match 6-4, 4-6 (10-4) and Nikola Janev won 6-2 and 6-0 in dominant fashion.
 
On Sunday, the men's team lost by a score of 5-2 against the Redmen while the women dropped a 6-1 decision to the Martlets. Sareen again played well picking up a hard fought 6-4, 6-7 (7-3) victory in the only men's singles victory on the day. In doubles action, Brar and Andrew Razaev picked up an 8-6 win for the Lions while Zoidl and Janev also won 8-4. Veteran Sara Krupica picked up the lone win for the Lions women's squad beating her opponent 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4 out of the first line position.
 
The Lions will be on the road next weekend when they travel to Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday to take on the Waterloo Warriors and St. Catharines, Ont., on Sunday to battle the Brock Badgers.
