The York University Lions men's hockey team lost 6-3 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Gryphons opened-up the first period scoring two back-to-back goals just under the first three minutes of the game. York's
Jeremy Lucchini, who currently has a record of four goals this season - three of them from this game - scored an unassisted goal on a power play to give the Lions their first goal of the game. The Lions finished the period one goal behind the Gryphons who led 2-1.
Though the Lions had a total of nine shots on goal and the Gryphons eight, the Gryphons managed to get back on the scoreboard during the second period while the Lions struggled to produce a goal. The Gryphons led 3-1 going into the third where they were able to continue to extend their winning margin on the home team.
In the third, York's Lucchini scored his second goal of the game, this time with an assist from
Brendan Browne and
Scott Feser. The Gryphons were able to score another three goals in a row within three minutes, two of them from Mikkel Aagaard. The Gryphons then led 6-2 until Lucchini, assisted by
David Sherman and
Ben Verrall, was able to get another goal past Gryphons goaltender Andrew Masters with seconds remaining in the final period.
The Lions are now 5- 8 this season and ninth in the OUA West division following a busy three-game week, while the Gryphons move up to a 5-5 record and fifth in the OUA West division.
They will be back on home ice next Friday taking on the Brock Badgers at 7pm.
