The York University Lions men's hockey team lost 3-2 to the Waterloo Warriors during their action-packed Saturday night game at Canlan.
The last eight seconds of the game saw the most action. The Lions, who were down by one goal, pulled goaltender
Cole Ceci and brought on an extra man to try to tie the game. With seconds remaining, the Lions were awarded a penalty shot after it was ruled that Waterloo goaltender Trevor Martin knocked the net.
York's
Scott Feser got called to take the shot, however, Martin was able to block the possible game-tying shot. Martin, who was unimpressed with the referee's initial call, got called for another penalty soon after giving the Lions a 6-on-4 advantage, but the Lions were unable to produce the last shot needed to go into overtime.
The game started off favourably for the home side as they scored two goals in the first period, leaving the Warriors scoreless. York's
Peter De Coppi scored the first goal for the Lions with assists from
Jack Goranson and
Nik Malenica. The first goal was soon followed by York's second, courtesy of
Brendan Browne with the assist coming fromÂ
Braydon Buziak.
In the second period the Warriors picked up the pace and were off to an aggressive start. The visiting team answered with two goals in the span of four minutes, knotting the game at 2-2.
The third period would prove to be the determining one between the teams who had scored both their goals in separate periods. It looked like the Lions were going to take the lead when
Jeremy Lucchini had a close shot during a Lions power play. Waterloo's defence, however, was able to prevent the puck from reaching the back of the net.
It was during a two-man charge towards the net that the Warriors were able to score their third goal on the Lions and ultimately take the win.
The Lions are now 5-9-1-0 on the season and will take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Puck drops at 7:07pm.
