The York University Lions track and field team won five medals at its annual Xmas Open meet at the Toronto Track and Field Centre on Saturday.
Leading the way was Lions newcomer
Holly Taylor, who spent two seasons in the NCAA before transferring to York. She won gold medals in both throwing events, finishing first in the weight throw with a distance of 16.30m and in the shot put with a throw of 12.19m. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the weight throw in U SPORTS.
Also claiming a gold medal was rookie middle distance runner
Abdullahi Abdullahi, who crossed the finish line first in the 1000m with a time of 2:47.1.
Abdullahi wasn't the only medallist on the track as
Monique Simon-Tucker picked up the silver medal in the 60m. The team captain and reigning OUA silver medallist in the event, she posted a personal-best time of 7.60 seconds to finish in second place. Like Taylor, she finds herself ranked among the best in the nation, holding down the second spot in the event.
Rounding out the medals was
Olivia Henry, who won the bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 5.27m, equalling her personal best.
Overall, the Lions had seven personal bests and 13 season's best performances on the day.
The Lions are now off for the month of December and will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the annual Sharon Anderson Meet at the University of Toronto.
