LIONS HANG CLOSE BUT END UP ON WRONG END OF RESULT AGAINST VOYAGEURS

The York University Lions men's basketball team put up a fight at the end but were ultimately defeated by a score of 84-76 at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday night.

In the first quarter the Voyageurs gained an early lead, but the Lions were beginning to close in. A three-pointer from Prince Kamunga helped the Lions close the gap, but the Voyageurs had the upper hand in the first as they outscored the Lions 17-11.

In the second quarter the Lions continued to trail the Voyageurs 24-13 when a basket from DeAndrae Pierre helped the Lions gain momentum. The home squad continued to close the game until they were only down by five points. With a series of mistakes on the Lions end the Voyageurs continued to extend their lead over the Lions by nine points and finished the half leading 37- 31.

In the second half, Kamunga helped the Lions gain their second wind as he scored back-to-back baskets. The Lions called a timeout and came out of it with intensity and hung close. MJ Forbes came through with a nice layup followed by a free throw from Somto Dimanochie. Despite the Lions late push, once again they were led by the Voyageurs 64-53 at the end of the third.

The final quarter started off with the Lions gaining the first point, on a free throw from Nick Russell, but the Voyageurs used their balance scoring attack to put the game out of reach. Midway through the frame the Lions trailed by as many as 18 before charging late and finishing eight points back.

Kamunga led the team in scoring with 26 points, followed by Pierre with 13 and Tyler Pryce with 10.

The Lions will look to snap their losing streak when they play their next game away in St. Catharines, Ont., against the Brock Badgers at 8pm on Wednesday night.
