The York University Lions men's hockey team picked up a 3-1 victory over the Brock Badgers on Wednesday night at Canlan Ice Sports.
The result marked the second win in six days over the Badgers and the third straight game the Lions have earned at least one point.
In the first period, the Lions were pressuring hard and played tough defence. Six minutes in, the Badgers had a substantial chance for themselves to score, but Lions goalie
Cole Ceci made a desperate save and smothered Brock's chance.
Xavier Pouliot had a powerful wrister from the blue line, but unfortunately it deflected and the puck went over the net. The Lions were playing excellent as they continued to pressure the Badgers, but it was Brock who had the best chance of the first as a turnover resulted in a shot from Jordan Sambrook dinging off the post. The close call gave the Badgers momentum as they played the remainder of the first period in the Lions end. Both the first and second periods ended in a scoreless tie.
The third period commenced and Brock's Dexter Weber got the first shot on net but, once again, Ceci came through with the save.
The teams were going tit for tat and Brock had a strong chance, but
Tyler Higgins blocked it, and the Lions went on the counter-attack.
Dylan Riley scored the opening goal in the first two minutes of the period, assisted by
Morgan Messenger.
The lead didn't last long, however, as the Badgers scored a goal of their own from Christian Girhiny. Not long after the goal, the Lions were on another counter-attack. The Brock goalie gave a big rebound that lead to a scrum in front of the net and Messenger with assists from
Alex Mowbray and
Scott Feser, put the puck in the back of the net, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead over the Badgers.
Late in the period, the Badgers Jordan Malletta went in on a breakaway but Ceci prevented the tying goal.
Messenger added an empty netter late to round out the scoring.
The Lions got back into the win column and will play their next game on Thursday in Waterloo Ont., against the Waterloo Warriors at 7pm.
