After a fun-filled virtual Bingo for the Cure event promoting cancer awareness and research on March 28, the York University Lions came away with a huge haul.
The initiative, led by ambitions York student-athletes, raised $6,337 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The donations were all taken virtually, and were split between team gifts and bingo registration money.
"We are so thrilled we could continue with our annual cancer fundraising campaign with a splash of creativity," said Lions women's volleyball head coach
Jen Neilson, who spearheaded the event.
"We are so proud to say we raised over $6300 for the Canadian Cancer Society! An incredible group of student-athletes really drove this process to connect and better the community and they demonstrated the true heart of a Lion. Thank you to the community and many supporters of this initiative, because without their support this wouldn't have been possible. Congratulations to our many Bingo winners, it was a great night!"
Across U SPORTS, schools came together for breast cancer research through the annual Shoot for the Cure initiative earlier this month. Through Bingo for the Cure, York Athletics & Recreation expanded the realm of this fundraiser to include all forms of cancer research and a wide-ranging group of Lions teams led the charge for donations. In addition to women's volleyball, the Lions women's basketball, women's hockey and men's volleyball teams were involved, as well as members of the York Sport Council.
Typically, U SPORTS schools raise money through regular season games in Canada West, the OUA, RSEQ and AUS, as well as other special events. This year, due to the ongoing reality of the pandemic, the event was moved to Zoom where the charity bingo game with a minimum of a $5 registration took place.
