Members of the York University Sport Council did not let the pandemic stop them from fundraising for a good cause this year, coming together to make a recent donation of $4,100 to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The money was raised through cash and online donations from Lions across all varsity teams.
Tara Leithead, who was the York Sport Council president from 2019-21, led the fundraising initiative. The original plan was to host a Relay for Life event but when that wasn't possible due to COVID-19 restrictions, she and the rest of the council executive pivoted and still found a way to collect funds.
"The 'c' word is daunting and something that holds great weight for families that are faced with a loved one who is diagnosed," said Leithead. "I would like to thank all the student-athletes, coaches, parents and staff who helped me put this all together and have supported this cause! It is a great honour to be part of a community that continues to make such amazing changes."
Raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society is a cause that has been near and dear to the Lions for many years. A number of different varsity teams have hosted "for the Cure" events throughout the last several seasons as part of a broader fundraising initiative led by the York Sport Council. These events, usually as part of home games, have included bake sales, bracelet sales, silent auctions and more.
The Canadian Cancer Society is the only national charity that supports all Canadians living with all cancers across the country. The organization funds groundbreaking cancer research into all types of cancer, offers support services to help people better manage life with cancer, shapes health policies to prevent cancer. supports those living with the disease and offers trusted cancer information for all Canadians.
