York University Lions men's soccer player
Justin Cicchillo and field hockey player
Lexi Hannah were tapped as York's athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 2 for their standout performances at Keele campus this past weekend.
Â
Cicchillo, a first-year business and society student from Woodbridge, Ont., enjoyed a productive weekend in his team's contests against the Algoma Thunderbirds on Oct. 1 and 2. He potted five goals over two games en route to a convincing set of wins for York over Algoma, 6-0 and 12-1 respectively.
Â
The Lions men's soccer squad needed those wins – they came at a time where they had a slight advantage over the Cape Breton Capers for No. 1 in the country, and it also vaults them into first place in the OUA West, passing the Western Mustangs for that honour.
Â
Hannah, a fourth-year psychology student from Kingston, Ont., broke out for three key goals to finish off a sweep of the weekend for the field hockey squad against the Queen's Gaels. They took the contests by a final score of 3-0 and 6-0 respectively.
Â
The field hockey squad now sits atop the entire conference with a 5-1-1 record, passing Toronto for that distinction as we move toward the end of the OUA regular season.
Â
York will now face off against the No. 1 nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues in a battle of the OUA's top teams at Alumni Field on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The game begins at 7 pm.
