The York University Lions men's basketball team took on the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday in Guelph. Although the Gryphons came into this one without a win, it was the home side coming away with a 97-77 victory to earn their first victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Guelph came out of the gate hot, and the Lions kept the game close for most of the first quarter. However, the Gryphons closed the quarter on an 11-3 run over the final 3:40, and led 31-15 after one. The Gryphons shot 12-17 from the field (70%) in the opening quarter.
- The duo of Prince Kamunga and Somto Dimanochie combined well in the second period to occupy the short corner area and claim rebounds which shifted the attacking momentum to York. They went on a 9-0 run over the span of 2:43 in the second to cut Guelph's lead to single digits. However, the Gryphons came back strong, finishing the half on an 8-1 run to lead 50-33 at the break.
- The Lions then started the third quarter with a 6-2 scoring spurt in the opening 2 minutes through Kamunga and Tyler Pryce
- However the offensive approach put on display by the Lions allowed more space for the Guelph forwards after defensive rebounds which further expanded the Gryphons lead. They led 77-57 after three.
- The scoring was even at 20 apiece in the fourth quarter, as the Gryphons took this one by a score of 97-77 as the Lions drop their fifth of the season.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will host the second-placed Brock Badgers up next at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 pm on Friday, November 25.
