Despite a hard-fought, nail-biting affair, the York University Lions men's basketball team fell short to the Brock Badgers Friday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Prince Kamunga led the way for the Lions with an impressive 25-point performance over the course of the 23 minutes. Nonetheless, it was not enough in the face of the OUA Central Division leaders and defending Wilson Cup champions.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions got rolling first, as the squad put together a 8-2 run to force an early timeout by the Badgers less than two minutes into the contest. Following the timeout, the Badgers responded with a 17-6 run to close the quarter.
- The second quarter was a tale of tight defence, as both teams held each other to nine points apiece. Tyler Pryce, Latrelle Gonzales, and Elias Panagiotopoulos accounted for all the Lions points. The Badgers led 28-23 at the half.
- The third quarter played out in a similar manner to the second with a back-and-forth clash, as both teams were in search of a game-defining run. Kamunga put up 12 points in the frame, including back-to-back late threes, which cut the Brock lead to 44-42 after tbree.
- With high momentum and intensity, Kamunga put the Lions up 48-46 off two made jump shots. Somto Dimanochie made his mark on the game with a crowd-pleasing three-pointer to take the lead 53-49. From there, it was all Brock, as an 11-0 run put the Badgers up for good en route to a 68-63 win over the Lions
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"It was a huge improvement from where we were a week or two ago to now where we're competing with the best in the country. We are going to keep building our culture, and continue pushing to get our guys ready to play every night." — head coach Jermain Holness
