The York University Lions tennis program will have two new faces leading the charge this season.
Ken Crosina has been brought on as York's new Head Coach, Tennis Program, taking a lead position and overseeing entire operations of the tennis program at York. Meanwhile,
Dr. Melissa Cutler will lead the Lions women's program in 2022.
"Ken and Melissa represent the future of York University's tennis program," said
Rebecca Boyd, York's Interim Manager, Varsity Athletics who led the search process for the two new coaches. "Their incredible breadth of experience and commitment to leading the rebuild of our tennis program leaves me very confident in their ability to foster a positive trajectory for our student-athletes. I look forward to seeing the teams in action later this week and am happy to officially welcome Ken and Melissa to the Lion Pride!"
Crosina, a native of Whitby, Ont. played his collegiate tennis at Florida State University. Following his days in Tallahassee, he was a provincial singles and doubles champion as well as a national doubles titlist.
He has more than two decades on the GTA tennis scene off the court. He has been the Director of Tennis at Mayfair Clubs in Toronto since 2014. He's also made his mark on collegiate tennis in helping with the design and development of the Campus Tennis Centre in 2001, a project completed in collaboration with Durham College and Ontario Tech University.
He has been a fixture at National Bank Opens for the last 25 years, acting as the voice of the event since 2016. He has also voiced numerous Davis Cup, Billie Jean King Cup and Tevlin Challenger tournaments.
Cutler had a remarkable junior career, where she was the highest ranked player in the province in the U-12 category. She also ranked as high as 17th in Canada as a singles player and eighth in doubles play throughout her teen years.
She struggled with injuries during her stay at St. Louis University, which prematurely derailed a promising playing career. Her health issues were a major factor in her choice to become a chiropractor; she is a graduate of both Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto and McMaster University.
She has coached tennis for 25 years at all levels of the sport. She places a premium on players learning sound fundamental mechanics of the game as a way to minimize the risk of injury. She is a club pro 2 instructor and has coached at Granite Club for 20 years before joining Crosina at Mayfair in 2014. There, she serves as the High Performance pro as well as team chiropractor.
Lions tennis gets underway Friday, Sept. 9 with matches against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Tait McKenzie Centre tennis courts. Admission is free. Please head to yorkulions.ca over the course of the season to follow the trajectory of the Lions.
