Travon Hamilton's jumper gave the York University Lions men's basketball team the cushion they needed to down the Laurentian Voyageurs in a 78-75 Saturday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
With the victory, the Lions go 2-0 on the weekend after defeating the Nipissing Lakers 80-75 last night — their first weekend sweep since Jan. 9-10, 2015.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Prince Kamunga and Somto Dimanochie got the Lions off to a hot start in the first quarter, as they combined for 18 of the team's 27 points. With the game tied up at 13-13 with 3:48 remaining in the first, the Lions went on a 14-4 run to end the quarter, alongside a buzzer-beating three-point jump shot by Yaw Antwi-Boasiako giving the Lions a 27-17 edge.
- With both teams trading baskets, the Voyageurs managed to trim the deficit to a seven-point game at 4:49 in the second quarter, however, the Lions did not go away as they continued to create offensive opportunities and managed to hold off to a nine-point advantage at halftime.
- With the Voyageurs continuing to find their momentum, Abdulmajid Hassan cut it to a four-point game while connecting a three-pointer with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter.
- The Lions wasted no time in the final frame, as they fired off to an 11-4 run, gaining a 76-66 advantage with 7:08 remaining. Not long after, the Voyageurs put an end to the Lions run, as they tightened up the game with their 9-0 run and held off the Lions scoreless for the last six minutes, cutting the game to 76-75.
- Just when things were looking in favour of the visitors, Hamilton delivered the game-winning clutch jump shot with 32 seconds remaining on the clock as the Lions defence held off the Voyageurs in the dying seconds of the contest to secure a 78-75 victory.
