York University Lions men's soccer player Christian Zeppieri and women's hockey player Sara McLennan have been named York male and female athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 5.
Zeppieri, a first-year midfielder, takes home his second athlete of the week after scoring the first goal for the Lions in their OUA semi-final win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, qualifying the team for the U SPORTS championships in Sydney, N.S. Less than 24 hours later, the accounting major was named OUA MVP, becoming the first Lions rookie to win the award since 2013.
Zeppieri and the Lions will embark on Sydney later this week, opening their quest for a national title on Thursday when they collide with the Mount Royal Cougars of Canada West.
McLennan, a third-year defender, scored her first OUA goal just under 11 minutes into the second period on Friday night against the Waterloo Warriors. That goal gave York a 2-0 lead and stood up as the winner as the Lions earned their first win of the season. With the goal, the Winnipeg, Man. native posted her first point since Dec. 2, 2022, an assist also against Waterloo.
McLennan and the Lions now prepare to host the Ontario Tech Ridegbacks on Friday before travelling to St. Catharines to battle the Brock Badgers on Saturday.
