York University Lions women's basketball player Ella Okubasu and men's hockey player Harry Clark have been named York athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 1
Okubasu, a fourth-year commerce – marketing student made an impact in all areas of the game this past weekend, helping the Lions to their best start in nearly half a century. The native of Toronto, Ont., put up a team-leading 20 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists and three steal in the Lions win over the Windsor Lancers on Friday night, improving them to 3-0 for the first time since 2005-06. She then scored 11 points and added another nine rebounds, plus four more assists in another dominant win over Western Mustangs, moving the Lions to 4-0 for the first time in 45 years. Over the two games, Okubasu shot 11-of-21 from the field and made seven of her nine free throw attempts, while scoring averaging 15.5 points a game, 9.0 boards and 4.0 assists.
Okubasu and the Lions play the third game of a four-game road trip Saturday afternoon at Algoma, looking for their first 5-0 start since that 1981-82 campaign when they started 6-0. Action from Sault Ste. Marie gets going at 2:00 p.m., and you can watch the game live and on demand on OUA TV.
Clark, a third-year criminology student, made a triumphant return to the Lions lineup Friday night in Guelph after missing the first six games of the season due to an injury suffered in training camp. He would waste little time making an impact in his return, putting up three points and factoring in on all three York goals. After drawing the primary assist on goals from Olivier Lamothe and Keaton Oakley, the pride of Timmins, Ont., capped his night with a beautiful overtime winner off a slick feed from Spencer Thompson in tight to give the Lions the extra point and earn them their third win of the season.
Clark and the Lions will have the weekend off before returning to action Friday, Nov. 13 against the Waterloo Warriors in the third meeting of the season between the two games. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., and you can watch the game live and on demand on OUA TV.
