ZEPPIERI NAMED U SPORTS FIRST-TEAM ALL CANADIAN FOLLOWING STELLAR ROOKIE CAMPAIGN

York University Lions men's soccer player Christian Zeppieri has once again been recognized for his tremendous arrival on the OUA scene in 2023, this time at the national level.

Just a week after winning the OUA MVP, the first-year midfielder was named a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian, as announced by the national office on Wednesday. The award also comes after he was named York's male athlete of the week for the period ending Nov. 5.

Zeppieri, an accounting major from Maple, Ont., has had some huge goals in critical moments for his team this season. He scored the Lions first goal of the year in his OUA debut on Sept. 1 against the Laurier Golden Hawks, forcing a 1-1 draw.

His first home goal as a Lion came on Oct. 1 when he scored the 87th-minute winner to break a scoreless tie and give the Lions an invaluable three points. Then, late in the second half of extra time of York's OUA semi-final win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, he launched a free kick inside the near post to give the Lions the lead in a game they would eventually win in penalties.

Despite falling in the OUA championship to Carleton, Zeppieri and the Lions are headed to the U SPORTS championships in Cape Breton, N.S. as the second OUA berth by virtue of that semi-final victory. They will commence their tournament Thursday evening at 6:30 pm ET (7:30 pm local) against the Canada West champion Mount Royal Cougars.
