Prince Kamunga's three-pointer at 3:57 of the first quarter were the go-ahead points for the York University Lions men's basketball team, as they went up 7-4 on the No. 7 nationally-ranked Queen's Gaels and never gave up the lead. They would come away with a convincing 78-66 win, despite entering the game as heavy underdogs.
Â
The win was York's first over a ranked opponent in a regular season game since Jan. 20, 2017, when the Lions toppled the then-No. 10 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders. Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kamunga and Quentin Herbert were notable performers, as the duo both posted 18 points, with Herbert going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc – a game high from either team.Â
- After posting the fourth-highest single-game rebound total in Lions men's basketball history on Friday, Somto Dimanochie followed up his 18-board performance with 10 more as part of a double-double which included 12 points.Â
- The aforementioned Kamunga three-pointer also served as a significant milestone for him, scoring point No. 1,590Â on his OUA career. This placed him in the top 50 all-time on the OUA point scoring list.
LOOKING AHEAD
Â
While York's home schedule has ended, the Lions are most definitely not done, as they have more opportunities to increase their win total against two teams trailing them in the standings before the season ends.
Â
First, they head to Waterloo, Ont. to play the Warriors Wednesday, Feb. 15, before wrapping up the season on Sunday, Feb. 19 vs. the Algoma Thunderbirds. Both games will be available for streaming on OUA.tv.
