York University Lions field hockey player Jade Lew and men's wrestler Stephan Niron were named York athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 3.
Lew, a fourth-year goalkeeper from Coquitlam, B.C., put on an exceptional showing this week at the Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Invitational Championship for the host Lions. The biology major stopped 15 of 19 shots she faced over four games at the championship, her final matches in a Lions uniform. That included two shutouts in the round-robin portion of the tournament over the UPEI Panthers and Waterloo Warriors, as the Lions earned a silver medal. For the season, Lew finishes with six shutouts, including four in the regular season.
She will graduate with a bachelor of science in biology and minor in psychology.
Niron, a fifth-year political science major, brought home the bronze medal in the 57kg category at the season-opening McMaster Open. In his first match, he beat Yasser Saleh by technical fall, 10-0. He then fell to Brock's Matteo Romano by technical fall, 18-8, to send him to the consolation side of the bracket. He rebounded to beat Jacob Abbott and Rishank Sharma, both by 10-0 technical falls, to earn the bronze.
Niron and the Lions now prepare for the TMU Open on Sunday.
