LIONS LOOKAHEAD: SOCCER HOOKS UP WITH LANCERS, FOOTBALL EYES SECCOND STRAIGHT WIN

The York University Lions football team won its first game since 2019 (excluding a forfeit win over McMaster in 2022), and will look for its second straight win this weekend.

Meanwhile, the women's soccer team swept a pair of games at Algoma, outscoring the Thunderbirds 20-0 in the two matches. The men's team, however, settled for a split, winning Saturday by a 4-2 count, before falling to the T-Birds 3-1 on Sunday. The loss marked York's first ever defeat at the hands of Algoma after winning the first 15 all-time matchups.

The field hockey team won its first two games in shutout fashion, by the slimmest of margins. They took 1-0 wins over Waterloo and Guelph, with rookie Katie Tye scoring the winner on Saturday against the Warriors and Elyse Ives netting the lone goal in Sunday's victory over Guelph.

Meanwhile, the women's rugby team won its second game in convincing fashion, 43-19 over the Laurier Golden Hawks. They were led by reigning York female athlete of the week Erin Preston's four tries, and now sit in the sixth and final OUA playoff spot, three points up on Waterloo and a point behind the Brock Badgers for fifth.

Here's what's happening in the den this week:

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Lions host the Windsor Lancers Friday night in the first leg of a home-and-home this weekend. With their two wins over Algoma, the Lions sit third in the OUA west, six points up on both the Laurier Golden Hawks and McMaster Marauders. They face a Windsor team in a fight for its playoff lives, sitting sixth in the division with a 1-3-2 record. Nia Fleming-Thompson potted six goals in York's wins over Algoma last weekend, and now leads the OUA with 11 on the season. Friday's game kicks off at 6:00 pm, while Sunday's rematch begins at 1:00 pm.

MEN'S SOCCER

The Lions men's soccer team eyes a bounce-back this weekend after a surprising loss to the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday. The Lions dropped their first match of the season, and their first ever match to Algoma. Despite the stunning defeat, York still sits atop the OUA west, albeit by only a point over the red-hot McMaster Marauders, who haven't lost in nearly a month, going 5-0-1 since a season-opening loss at York on Aug. 30. Friday's game is set for 8:15 pm, with the back half going Sunday at 3:15 pm.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lions field hockey team looks to remain perfect on Friday night, hosting the Western Mustangs. Despite winning their first two games, they will look for an offensive spark, having scored just a single goal in both matches thus far. The Mustangs come in having split their first two games, losing 2-0 to Queen's before beating McGill 3-1. The Lions will then head to Hamilton on Saturday evening to face a 1-1 McMaster team. The Marauders also faced McGill and Queen's, in inverse order, in their first two games. They handled McGill 5-2 in their opener before dropping a 2-1 decision to Queen's on Sunday. Both games this weekend begin at 7:00 pm.

FOOTBALL

The Lions football team makes the long trek to the nation's capital this weekend to battle the Carleton Ravens. Coming off an emotional win in the Red & Blue Bowl – their first on-field victory since 2019 – the Lions battle an intriguing Carleton team. In terms of record, the Lions match up well with the 1-4 Ravens, but two of Carleton's four losses have come by a combined five points, including a walk-off loss to the 4-0 Windsor Lancers. This game provides the Lions an opportunity to show even more of what they're made of, while earning consecutive wins for the first time since 2005.

WOMEN'S RUGBY

The Lions women's rugby squad looks to move above .500 since 2019 with a win on Saturday night at McMaster. The Lions come in sitting sixth in the OUA, looking to further solidify their spot in the playoff picture. This will be a measuring stick game for York, as, though McMaster comes in at 3-1, their wins have come against Trent, Laurier and Toronto, the bottom three teams in the OUA.

TENNIS

The Lions tennis team will host the Queen's Gaels this weekend at Mayfair West. The Lions tennis teams went a combined 2-2 last weekend over Toronto and Brock. They were swept by the Varsity Blues on Saturday (M: 1-6; W: 0-7), but swept the Badgers the following day (M: 6-1; W: 4-3). Saturday's matches begin at 5:30 pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lions cross country team heads to Waterloo for the Don Mills Open, their second meet of the season.
