York University Lions women's hockey goaltender Emma Wedgewood and men's soccer player Yigal Bruk have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 19.

Wedgewood, a fourth-year kinesiology and health science student, was outstanding for the Lions in starting both games of their back-to-back this weekend against the Waterloo Warriors and TMU Bold. The Innisfil, Ont., native made 41 stops on 43 shots to help her team beat Waterloo by a 5-2 score, and followed it up with a 28-save performance in a 4-2 win over TMU on Sunday. Overall, Wedgewood made 69 saves on 73 shots on the weekend, helping York get off to its first 3-1 start since 2019-20 when they won the OUA silver medal.

Wedgewood and the Lions will play their first two road games of the year this weekend, visiting TMU and Brock.

Bruk, a second-year forward and neuroscience student, saved his best for the most important game of the Lions season – so far. After scoring just once in the entire regular season, he tripled his goal output in York's 3-2 OUA quarter-final win over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday night, opening the scoring in just the third minute and adding an insurance marker in the 32nd to solidify York's 14th trip to the OUA semis in the last 15 seasons. The Vancouver, B.C., native now has four goals in his last four playoff games dating back to the 2024 U SPORTS championships, in which he scored in both Lions wins, over the St. FX X-Men in the quarter-finals and McGill Redbirds in the bronze medal game.
